Exploring Koh Lanta.
From Koh Phi Phi we took the speed boat to Koh Lanta. A thirty minutes boat ride and arriving at Saladan; a little harbour village with lots of bars and restaurants. Not really a beautiful area, but close to Kon-Tiki Lanta, the scuba diving centre with whom we wanted to book our 3 days diving.
When we arrived at 11:00 in the morning we could not go into our room until 2 p.m., so we went to the closest restaurant “The Swedish Restaurant” owned by a sweet Thai family and with great wifi. The owner used to be a DJ and the restaurant was stacked with music memorabilia.
“The Swedish Restaurant” became our favorite spot, mainly because the wifi in Lanta Pura Resort was very bad. I had to log in every five minutes and if this happened when I was in the middle of uploading pictures to the blog, all my work was lost. They also had one key with a card to put the electricity on. So the moment you left the room, you could not charge your batteries. And we had two mobiles, a laptop, a tablet, a photo camera and an underwater video camera. So during the night it was not possible to charge all equipment.
That night we ate at “Funky Monkey” the biggest bar-restaurant of Koh Lanta, two floors and with live music and …. karaoke! Johan loves karaoke-bars. He sang “Your Song” again, which he had sung for me at our wedding. After that he was called “Elton Johan” by our waiter Xander, a Philippine guy, who right away wanted to do the duet of Aladdin “A whole new world” which Xander sang in falsetto. Also Funky Monkey became one of our favorites spots on the island. Johan went 4 or 5 times per night on stage and every night Xander wanted to sing the Aladdin-duet with ‘his Elton Johan’.
The wifi and electricity in our hotel “Lanta Pura Resort” was such a bummer that I complained at the reception. But the only solution they had was to reset the modem. Well, this did not help at all. And for the electricity problem we solved ourselves by breaking the brazed key from the electricity card so we could charge our equipment in our room during our absence . I understand that the hotels don’t want their guest to have their air-condition on the whole day, but they also must understand that people have to charge more batteries than one during the day.
For the rest the hotel was fine. We had our room in the older part of the hotel, but our corner balcony was bigger than in the modern part and our view was really amazing!
In Madrid Johan catched a cold, which hurted his sinuses during the flights to Thailand. In Chiang Mai we went to pharmacy for nose- and ear drops and antibiotics. But on Koh Lanta his ears were still hurting so he could not scuba dive. And we specially booked a week at Koh Lanta because of the three days diving. So I booked only two days diving at Kon-Tiki and Johan would join me on the second day for some snorkling. That is why we decided to rent a scooter to explore the island.
We stopped at Klong Khong Beach and Klong Nin Beach.
Just before Bamboo Bay in the South you could walk to The Khlong Chak Waterfall. The walk through the rain forest – passing caves and with a lot of strange sounds of the wildlife and birds -was more spectacular than the final stop at the waterfall.
Our visit at restaurant “The Dream Bar” at Bamboo Bay was really a dream. The amazing view on the beautiful golden sandy beach, where we ate great and reasonable priced fresh food, relaxed on day beds while Johan was reading on his E-reader .
The entrance fee to the Mu Ko Lanta National Park we had to pay 200 bath per person and 100 bath for our scooter (total of €12,50). The beautiful trees and climbing to the light house with a view to the smaller islands and the rain forest was really worth the trip to the most Southern point of the island!
The second day we rented a scooter again and went to the East side of the island where we visited Lanta Old Town. If we go back to Koh Lanta I would book a Bed & Breakfast there. We loved the laid-back hippie atmosphere, which reminded us of Ibiza.
Here are three panorama pictures Johan took with his mobile.
