One of our favorite restaurants on Ibiza is Destino in Sant Josep. Moroccan tapas of extremely good quality. So when we had to choose our catering for the wedding, we were thinking about Destino Rotterdam. These restaurants don’t have any connection, but the only link is that the owner, Nelleke Elbert, lived and worked a summer on Ibiza and she also likes Destino Sant Josep. Back in Rotterdam Nelleke and her love Niels Koomans missed the Spanish cuisine. In March 2010, after Nelleke’s experience at La Pizza, they decided to start a Spanish restaurant on the Zaagmolenkade in the trendy and upcoming North of Rotterdam.
And it are no ordinary tapas they serve! You taste their love for Spain. They mix the Spanish cuisine with the Moorish cuisine on a sophisticated level. This nueva cocina is classical Spanish with combinations that are lighter, healthier and more exciting. The menu is seasonal and therefore changes monthly. They buy products in Belgium and Spain or super fresh products at the Rotterdam market. Therefore they also have a wide range of daily changing tapas outside their menu.
Everything perfect and value for your money. Add to this a delightfully fresh, sleek interior, relaxed service and always full of nice people. Nelleke and Niels like it that anyone can just walk in, so it is not possible to book in advance. But once you’ve secured a table at Destino: stay forever! Destination achieved!
On the second of December 2014 Johan and I went to Destino, with our two ushers Antoin and Dennis, to try out various dishes for our wedding. The relaxed Nelleke would occasionally sit at our table to explain everything. Her whole appearance and sweet attitude suited us well and we all four agree right away: Destino had to do the catering for our big day!
For our wedding dinner we chose the following starters: shells of the season, open baked with thyme, rosemary and black pepper, morcilla (blood sausage) with red fruit compote, avocado with sweet red pepper jam and dried tuna and pimentos padron with sea salt. And for the main course we chose: cod with cauliflower puree and dried capers or beef with shallot gravy and celery cream served with pumpkin fries with sage mayonnaise, fresh salad with endive, arugula, pine nuts and herbs and of course roasted vegetables with Romesco sauce (cold roast tomato sauce, almonds and ñora pepers). And for desert: a glass of muscatel with a piece of goat cheese, fig bread, nuts, dried fruit, chocolate and turron.
And at the evening party the next tapas: gazpacho (cold soup of tomato and vegetables), croquetas (chicken croquettes), pescado frito (rice-gamba balls), albondigas (meatballs in tomato sauce with saffron), pintxo queso de cabra (toasted bread with goat cheese, sweet red pepper, raisin and onion jam and chopped almonds), pintxo jamon Serrano (toasted bread with arugula, tomato, Serrano ham and a dade), brocheta de pescado (skewer of monkfish and prawns with romesco sauce) and of course chorizo (sausage baked in orange-mustard caramel with sesame and walnut).
And you know what is such a coincidence? The beautiful pictures on the Destino-website are photographed by Sophia van den Hoek, former H&M-colleague of Harry, photographer of models at MAX Models and …… our wedding photographer!
