Billy Elliot with the girls.
There it is again… the 20th of June. The date my little niece Anoek celebrates a new year of her life. She turned 11 years old. What to give to an 11 year old girl? Toys and things they have plenty. So I thought it would be nice to go to Scheveningen and visit together with a girlfriend (Linda) the musical Billy Elliot.
Last evening the date was finally there. We went to my brothers home to pick up the girls. Driving from Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht to Scheveningen to the AFAS Circustheater. In the back of the car it was like a KIPPENHOK. They were so excited. Finally we arrived in Scheveningen. Once you see the theater you can already feel the atmosphere. This is what Joop van den Ende made succesful.
First we had a stop at Mc Donalds. We ordered 3 burger menu’s and a Salad menu for myself (I’m getting married, so my suit has to fit on The Big Day). The girls found the play corner of the Mc Donalds. Normally this is for kids of 8 years old and younger. But what the heck! They were having fun. During the meal the girls were getting louder and louder but they were having so much fun! And so did we of course.
Than finally we entered the theatre. Once we found our seats, we saw the lovely decoration of the stage. And than the magic happened!
Billy Elliot strikes me as the greatest Dutch musical I have ever seen, and I have not forgotten Wicked! or Le Misserable. There is a rawness, a warm humor and a sheer humanity here that are worlds removed from the soulless slickness of most musicals.
Yes there are some hard spoken words in the translation of Martine Bijl. And sometimes they struggle with a specially made accent for the musical. But they all bring it with so much passion and I am feeling a part of that stage.
Before the break little Billy and his best friend Michael take you to the closet with the clothes of Micheal’s sister. This part is so hilarious and brings the entertainment to one of the highest level. And the little boy who is playing Michael is a brilliant actor.
During the break it is time for candy and Pringles. And I need a glass of wine :-). Gertjan has to explain to the girls who was Margaret Thatcher and why the mine workers were striking.
After the brake Billy takes us on the hand again to tell this beautiful and lovely story. I thought it would never surpass the movie. But it actually did. The ballet dancing in Billy’s dream with another dancer was breathtaking. He flew above the stage. Pia Douwes is amazing this night and she even dances on pointe.
It is a brilliant musical, with sometimes a tear but also with a lot of fun. For me a must see for everyone!
It was already late and we had to hurry to the car. We drove back to Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht and at the back of the car the girls are giving us an opera concert, which more sounded like police car sirens :-). The girls arrived home safely. The two uncles were driving satisfied to their home. Sleep well.
