First day Madrid Gaypride 300.000 tourists!.
On the 1st of July we flew to Madrid to celebrate “Orgullo” the Madrid Gaypride.
Karel and Iep did not join us this time. We got a great tip from the store where we buy the frozen meat for the dogs: dog pension “Corazon de Perro” in San Carlos. I had to go for an intake on Monday so Eva, the owner, could meet the dogs. With her I discussed: Karel will do 3 short walks of 15 minutes per day because he is too old for the longer walks and Iep two big 1-hour walks at “El Bosque en Morna”.
Eva, the German owner of the pension, has lived already for 25 years on the island. She said:
“When you come back to pick them up they probably understand Spanish and a little bit German”.
I brought the dogs already Tuesday morning, so I could clean the house thoroughly, because right after Madrid we have 6 guests in the house.
Wednesday the alarm went off at 06:30 but the good thing was that we were already around 11:30 in our apartment. After a breakfast at Placa de la Paja we first went home for a little nap.
After the nap we went to the gay area Chueca, where we bought some clothes at the ES-store. A lot of our Rotterdam-friends were going to the Madrid Gaypride too and we just ran into Peter and Rogier near Plaza de Chueca. So we drank some beers together. Nice to meet them and to hear all the latest gossips, like the fight of Bonnie St. Claire with her husband in De Loge.
On the streets there were already people waiting for the opening that night. We first went home to eat and shower. You could see that Madrid was getting ready for the Gaypride. Everywhere the rainbow flags.
Around 7 PM we walked with our neighbor Miguel back to Plaza de Chueca. On our way we met Victor and Eduardo.
In the meantime it was so crowded that we could not get to the stage anymore. I read the day after that Madrid was expecting 2 million tourists and that there were 300.000 at the opening. Everybody was waiting for the speech of gay actor Alejandro Amenabar (won an Oscar in 2005 with The Sea Inside) and actress Cayetana Guillen-Cuervo and a beautiful, tall and lesbian TV-host in a yellow jumpsuit who’s name I forgot. We missed Conchita Wurst that night we found out later.
After the official opening we went to the gay streets and ended up at Bar FUEL for some beers on the street, where we met the rest of our friends. Funny is that all Spanish people buy their cold beers of 1 Euro at the “Chino” (little supermarket run by Chinese people) and drink them in front of a bar, where they sell their beers for 4 Euros. In Holland this would not be allowed. I went home around 12:30 but Johan was having so much fun with our friends, that he stayed until 2 AM.
Tomorrow more about the arrival of our friend Jack and the accident I made, so badly that I could not join Jack and Johan to the dance party DIESEL by Kluster.
