Best ski holiday ever, EVER!.
At Chicago airport we had a complimentary breakfast in the United Polaris Lounge, because Corey is a premium frequent flyer. A lovely breakfast of oatmeal, fruit, scrambled eggs with bacon and … of course Bloody Mary´s!
The flight to Aspen normally takes 2 and a half hours, but because of the fog the pilot made 3 landing attempts, aborted at the last moment and finally he decided to fly to Grand Junction, where we had to go by bus to Aspen, which was another 2 and a half hours. But the view from the bus windows was gorgeous!
A shuttle from the Limelight Hotel picked us up. Our hotel was super! Big rooms, great service and near all the shops and the gondel lift of Aspen Mountain (Ajax). Shuttles from the hotel bring you to the slopes and even do pick up at SnowMass resort, a 40 minutes drive! And the official apres-ski-party of the Aspen Gay Ski Week was at our hotel …. how convenient!
On Monday we went to the mountain “Buttermilk”. Johan´s first day skiing outside ever! He had only taken two hours of private lessons at the Indoor Snow World Zoetermeer. Corey taught him some new things and said he was a natural talent and the rest of the week he called Johan “my prodigy”. Everybody who saw Johan ski, could not believe it was his first time!
The second day we went to “Highlands” and the 3rd day to “Snow Mass” an enormous big resort. The 4th day to “Ajax” (Aspen Mountain) the slopes you could walk to from our hotel. I had not skied for 25 years. What struck me the most was the big difference of the length of the skies (they are much shorter) and that my shoes never hurted. But the greatest difference compared with skiing in Europe is: you never have to stay in line for the lifts, everybody is very polite, the guys and girls at the lifts are funny and cheerful, the slopes are so wide and well groomed every morning! And because the trees grow until 3.500 meters (in Europe they stop at 1.500 meters) it is less windy.
And of course the food and apres ski is great!
My next two blog stories are also about Aspen. The four Aspen girls we met at the wedding of Corey and Andreas in Amsterdam (and the Buddymoon which followed on Ibiza) organised a Aspen White Party for us on Thursday night and of course I want to tell you more about the Gay Ski Week.
But last but not least in this story some photos of the beautiful slopes of Aspen:
